The first dwarves

A bowman who was meant to be a crossbowman, a commander with no clan, and an enemy that was "good enough".

The first sprites approved for the game: the dwarven bowman, the commander Rill Farfound, and the trogg enemy roster, generated with PixelLab under direction and reviewed at play size.

The first sprites to survive review were not the ones we asked for. The ranged dwarf was designed as a crossbowman. Three prompt variants could not stop the generation model from drawing the weapon as a bow, and the bow animation it did draw was clean and readable in all eight headings. The lore ledger had no objection to bows in this era, so the crossbowman became the bowman, and the unit was renamed everywhere before a single map referenced it.

Rill Farfound

The campaign follows one authored commander: Rill Farfound, a foundling raised by elders of all three clans, which is the whole premise of the story in one person. A dwarf with no inherited clan who will have to choose one. Rill's kit is support and presence: a hammer throw, repair, and a rally, all already working in the mechanics before the art existed.

The troggs

Asked which enemy the first mission should have, the answer was "whatever the lore suggests", and the lore suggested troggs for a mine that has woken something up under Loch Modan. The brute, the rock-thrower and the leader were approved as drawn, with the verdict "good enough", which is the right verdict for a first enemy when the alternative is another week of iterating instead of playing.

What "approved" means here

Every one of these units sits at status review, not accepted, in the project's content records. Identity and art direction are approved. In-engine timing, balance and motion still have to be judged in play, and the records say so rather than rounding up.
